Review| Nion Beauty Opus Silicone Facial Brushes - Opus Express & Opus 2Go

I've received a set of cleansing brushes that features silicon brush head instead of the frictional nylon-bristled brush head. Upon reading the information, I've gained new insight and want to share with you the difference between our typical nylon-bristled facial brushes and the one with silicone bristles. But first, let me talk about the products I've just received. Offering unrivalled value and a whole host of innovative features, the Opus Express is this year’s must-have cleansing face brush. Ideal for those looking to explore the potential of S-ion Technology®, it also makes a great gift for a loved one and a fantastic treat for yourself.

Brand Info

Nikon Beauty

Nion Beauty is revolutionizing skin care brand that combines cutting-edge advances in materials science with leading dermatological research to produce a range of beauty products that are years ahead of the competition. They have been providing skincare cleansing devices in US-based companies which are developed by leading research teams from USA & Korea whilst combines Japan cutting-edge technology. Nion Beauty Cleansing Device comes with Kinetic Skin Cleansing & S-ION Technology which makes Nion Beauty more outstanding as compared to other brands. Their Kinetic Skin Cleansing System uses vibrational energy to delicately break-up and whisks away impurities from the skin. The gentle vibration mechanism removes dirt, pollutants, impurities without stripping the face off its moisture. S-ION Technology is referring to the mix of rubber silicone and tourmaline which can generate negative ions to benefit the user's skin. Negative ions work like tiny magnets that attach to positive charged environmental toxins (dirt) on the skin, creating a heavier element which gets rinsed away easily.

Negative ions are naturally abundant in the air. They purify and help enhance mood naturally. They are also found in the air after a thunderstorm or near moving water, as well as within certain gemstones (e.g.: amethysts). Studies have found that negative ions contain ‘feel-good’ properties. They are known to help to boost one's mood, reducing stress, and promoting better overall health. At the same time, they have the ability to cleanse skin by removing dirt and toxins.

Benefits of Negative Ions on the Human Body:
Negative ions work like tiny magnets* that attach to positive charged environmental toxins (dirt) on the skin and pathogens (e.g., bacteria and allergens) that cause health problems by creating a heavier element which gets rinsed away easily. They strengthen the functions of autonomic nerves and reinforces collagen (tissues that are resilient and tension-related) which improves the permeability of the cell's prototype plasma membranes (improves metabolism) and strengthens the body's immune system. The negative ions neutralize pollutants and provide positive effects on health to stimulate the defence cells in the user's body. They also act on the user's capacity to absorb and utilize oxygen by accelerating the delivery of oxygen to cells and tissues

All Nion silicones have been treated with silver, delivering antibacterial skin care devices that are resistant to fungus, easy to clean and keep your skin radiant and clear! At the same time, their tourmaline infused silicone has been shown to generate negative ions for up to 20 years.

Nion Beauty has quite a variety of products. They have an affordable range and premium range of facial brushes as well as body brush. Products:

The first product that I'd like to introduce to you is this!

Nion Beauty OPUS EXPRESS

RSP RM 187.90 | Special Price RM169.10

Within the box, you will be receiving:
a manual, two warranty related leaflets, a pouch and a silicon handheld cleansing brush.

The brush head and the device is attachable and detachable. This allows you to switch brush heads when necessary without the need to purchase another set of the device, minimizing the cost. After attaching the brush head to the device, you're pretty much good to go!.... except one more thing.

You need to input two AA batteries into the device in order to power it up, which gives it roughly 250 hours of continuous running lifetime. Assuming that you're using it every day for 4 minutes, that will make the period of usage up to 10 years. It has 3 speeds, starting from the strongest to the weakest, which changes when you press the button briefly. To start it, press once. To stop it, press until 4th time.

The pouch is included in the set which allows travellers to keep the product safely without being damaged inside the bag/luggage throughout the journey. Convenient!

Speaking of travelling conveniences, Nion Beauty also has another product for those who would like to carry lesser weight and/or has a disposable feature.

Nion Beauty Opus 2Go

RSP RM140.90 | Special price RM126.80
for 3 units per pack

International Website | Facebook | Malaysia Website

Originally, it comes in 3 units per pack but I've received the single unit pack.

It is a small handheld cleanser brush that's easy to use and easier to carry. It's so light and small that you can fit it into almost anywhere in your carry-on or check-in bag.

To use it, all you need to do is press on of the ends to power up the device. Apparently, it has two internal cell batteries (button cells) with up to 10 uses (based on a recommended usage time of 3 minutes), which has a low voltage. It is also heat-resistant, soft, durable and antifungal. On their website, they said that the batteries contain enough power for up to a month of cleansing.

The teardrop shape makes it easy to use and effortlessly reaches every contour of your face. Not only that, it is water resistant and shower friendly. I have yet to try it but I'm sure it works as well as their big ones!

Let's go back to the Nion Beauty OPUS Express

💆

How to use

Step 1: Remove the battery cap by twisting it counter-clockwise. Insert two AA batteries by following the polarity guide. Close the cap by twisting it clockwise. Make sure to close it completely.

Step 2: Power on the device by pressing down the button and selecting your desired settings. High, medium, low, off.

Step 3: Wet your face with water and apply your favourite cleanser (Gel or cream cleanser recommended! Not recommending exfoliating cleansers as they could be harsh for your skin!)

Step 4: Wet the silicone bristles of your Opus Express with warm water (because it's waterproof!)

Step 5: Let your Nion do its thing! Gently glide the Opus Express across your face in a circular motion for 1 - 1.5 minutes (It is recommended for first-time users to deep cleanse for about 3 minutes

Step 6: Rinse your face. Pat dry for gorgeous, glowing skin. For best results apply your favourite moisturizer immediately after cleansing

Step 7: Care for your Opus Express by rinsing with warm water and let air dry. Use mild soap if necessary. Take note: This product is only suitable for shower use. Do not dunk it into the water!

Verdict

I'll be comparing this Nion Beauty (NB) brush with Mary Kay's (MK). Price range is about the same where MK sells RM 200 (at least at the time when I purchased). They both use two battery cells. They both have detachable brush heads and are waterproof as well.

Let's begin with how it feels when I'm holding it. The texture of the surface, I would prefer MK because it has a matter finishing whereas NB has a smoother and shinier surface. MK feels heavier than NB and the buttons feel better on MK. Generally, I prefer to have more buttons and I don't mind about the weight since it helps to reduce muscle stress. At the same time, it helps with the baggage weight.

While MK uses rotation, NB uses vibration. Initially, the vibration makes it feels weird if you have superficial content in your face, such as braces. However, once you've got used to it then it's actually fine. I have a preference to wash liquid masks with facial brushes as it helps to lessen the time and energy. Previously, when I wash off clay masks with MK brush, it felt harsher. Not only that, washing the masks off the bristles can be another hassle. On the other hand, when I use NB brush to wash it off, it felt smooth and a whole lot comfortable. Cleaning the brush after use is so, so, so much easier than I've expected as well. This makes maintaining the brush head so much more convenient.

It's actually hard to tell if my skin had improved because my skin has been improving from a lot of reasons, such as my diet change (caused by braces), increased water consumption and sleep time. However, I can be firm with you that my skin had never felt a single irritation at all and that is absolutely amazing. The bristles are so soft, yet they're able to clean your skin without causing any damages. I would emphasize that as the important aspect of what a facial brush should be. As much as I like bristle brushes, they're still rough on the skin and they still cause irritation. The vibration power/strength feels pretty sufficient too, like, it's not that powerful enough to burn your fats off like those fat-burning vibrating machines for bodies but also not too weak til you can't feel anything.

Overall, while both have their own pros and cons, I would still prefer a silicone facial cleansing brush mainly because I have eczema and it's a lot safer for me to use a less abrasive facial tool in order to minimize the changes to trigger eczema.

Now that you're aware of this brand sells a different type of facial brush, do you know what are the precise differences between this and other facial brushes like Clarisonic, Mary Kay and such?

Facial Brushes:
The Science of Cleansing Innovative, Convenient and Clean

Traditionally, facial brushes in Malaysia or for ASEAN countries use nylon bristles as their cleansing head. Unlike oral toothbrushes, the facial brush industry is currently still in the infancy stage but it will gain more attraction with the emergence of many brands that are trying to create a first-mover's advantage with a little amount of time. A popular brand named Clarisonic is currently the market leader in Malaysia for being the only visible brand that specializes in facial brushes. However, they only use nylon bristles in their products.

This market leadership of this L'oreal brand indicates that there are a ready market and the acceptability for such brushes. One can be hooked to the product due to the improvements of their skin and other benefits that one can derive from using it. Reviews of such facial brushes showed a positive potential for the future of facial brushes through the good reviews collected in major marketplaces and online blogosphere. Not only that, Clarisonic's limited doors has a correlation to initial resistance from retailers who are not positive about their products due to higher pricing, inventory costs and pilferage costs. In the meantime, there are some brands in Malaysia that offer a limited range of Bristle Facial Brush (BFB), Dermalogica (manual) and Ogawa. Quite often that the issue with BFB is that it does not clean or dry easily, resulting in the build-up of green mosses within the bristles. Ultimately, the speed of end-users taking up this new method of cleansing will hinge on A&P, education, tangible benefits, affordability, reliability and convenience.

See, how you clean matters.
The issue with traditional BFB is that the mechanical cleansing was meant for the brush heads to use friction to wash away dirt and oil. These bristles can harbour bacteria whilst stripping the skin of natural protective oils, leaving it dry, red, and irritated. This means that, while the nylon brushes rotate side to side or spin in circular motions, it potentially creates micro tears, irritations, redness, exacerbated skin conditions and dryness.

Nion Beauty Opus created a different material of 'bristles' that no longer creates friction and it does not assault the skin whilst remaining naturally bacteria-free. Nion’s unique silicone brushes require users to move up and down against the skin instead of side to side. This allows the skin to stay soft and it effectively removes toxin, improves blood circulation, and preserve the skin’s natural oils.

Silicone is a clever material that technically belongs to the rubber family. Although you’ll find it in everything from hard resins to medicines and oil. However, with no phthalates and low extractable content, it is safer actually than plastic as it does not react with other materials whilst remaining to be incredibly durable and soft. Best of all, the silicone that you’ll find in Nion skincare devices has antibacterial properties that make maintaining your products highly convenient.

In short:

  • Nion Silicone: The best results
  • Facial brushes: The one with a wide variety of limitations

That's all for this post! I hope you've learned something from this post :)
