Unboxing, Haul & Gifts! | It's a birthday!

My birthday was the first Sunday of this month and while I didn't celebrate with many people, I did treat myself the way I couldn't before. Not only that, I have wonderful friends and an amazing boyfriend who had gotten me something too 💝 Not to mention that there are many perks from brands available during birthday month! I redeemed so many perks, my boyfriend and I didn't even spend over RM150 on my birthday (besides the gifts he got me of course :p)!

Read about birthday promos/privileges here:

Here is a list of the things that I bought and received. I'll also explain why I bought those items instead of other available substitutes.

Sephora Haul

Total: RM 1046 | After 20% Off: RM 836.80

I'm a black card member but I don't usually spend money on Sephora. Seeing that my card is expiring on 23rd October and that I needed to spend at least RM781 for renewal kinda made me wanna spend as much. It's a bit of a reckless thing to do but I've finally got my first job, my birthday is this month and there's a 20% sale going on too. Eventually, I thought to myself, why the heck not? So I grabbed a cart and spent quite a long time in the store to decide what I want.

While I was deciding, I also used the Sephora app to do the calculation for the entire cart since it's easier than typing repeatedly on the calculator app. At the same time, I can instantly search for similar substitutes and compare prices without running around the store.

In Beauty talk Hauls Review The Apothecary Malaysia ZoelieWho

Review | The Apothecary Malaysia: Solid Colognes in Cornerstone, Hot Shot & Maverick

(unpaid lmao I literally bought this even tho they for men)
(update 14/8/2017: the concept is actually very similar to Solid State for Men from Melbourne, Australia)

_______________________

The Apothecary Malaysia: Specially catered for Modern Man.

These. Are colognes. Mainly for men.
I'm a lady. Not much of a masculine kind.
Why did I even bothered to buy them?

Reason: my guy friends' birthdays are here. HAHHAHA
I have nothing to gift and I somewhat came across the Facebook page of this brand.

Honestly, I was very intrigued by their concept of photography and design. I knew about solid perfume long ago when my mother brought me some from Paris, France. So the idea of solid cologne is just 'meh' for me. However, the packaging and the founder's success to sell these in Korea and America had really made me excited to know how these smell like. So I bought them.

Introduction:

‘The Apothecary’ came about from the word ‘pharmacist’ – way before the development of drugs and medicines; when empirical observation was the key to cure. The Apothecary Malaysia began as an effort to pick up this same spirit of the old, and reintroduce what our traditional pharmacists left off. Adrian Cheong (founder), coupled with his domestic skills in the kitchen – from his interest in making cheese and chee cheong fan from scratch, had started an interest to make perfume right from home, all handmade in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Colognes were named according to unique characteristics of a modern man, personifying empowerment – from meeting the needs of a corporate high-flyer, to an alpha male, or even a witty creative highbrow – covering all grounds. (Source)

How to's and What's

Tab a bit of the cologne with your fingers and rub on your wrist and neck. You can try putting behind your ears as well. They last about 3-4 hours and they do not contain alcohol. They can go back to solid state if they were melted (since they were made with beeswax, it's definitely going to melt in high temperature environment.) Sweating is normal for their product, as do other handmade products like soaps.

What's really in it?

As a craftsperson, I can tell that the ingredients and methods of making this are fairly simple. They used beeswax, shea butter, virgin almond oil for their solid base. These products are easy to find and you can easily replicate them with a couple of tries. What is difficult to replicate is the scent. They took about 6 months before operating, probably because of formulating fragrance oils and packing, etc.

They don't have a physical store

but they are available in many places countries.
USA (1), Taiwan (1), Thailand (1), Korea (2), Singapore (3), Hong Kong (6)
Malaysia (15)

Delivery & Others

The waiting time for delivery was very short. After purchasing, they immediately ship out the product and then the products reached me by the very next day. They used Pos Laju for my order.

Enough said.
Let's begin with my review.

_____________________________________________________

I bought three from them, each is weight at 0.5oz / 14g. Very light, yes. Very, very light.

Each one of them is in the tin containers of the same colour: Gold. (I was a bit disappointed that they weren't different but isokei, just my false expectations.)

The box looks very, very sleek in my opinion. I feel very excited when I see the box. It's just the kind of aesthetic that I'd like to reach but always fail .... ugh. ANYWAY, my point is, the packaging is just drop dead aesthetic.

The back of the packaging. More aesthetics. OOH.

Each tin container was designed as if to resemble gold bars. Something, that I'd admit is, very creative. It would fool someone if I'm holding this up from afar.

I think the tin containers are approximately 3cm x 6cm x 1cm. They are very small in person and I would suggest you have a bit of 'mental preparation,' especially if you are prone to have high expectations.

They were designed this small to fit into a pocket, that's why.

To open the tin container, you need to slide the cover downwards. It's a cool concept tho. Normally, a person would attempt to open it by flipping the right side of the container (which my colleagues and sister almost tried to do it.. aggressively.)

Slide down the lid and this is how it looks like, naked.

Add caption

The surface of the cologne has some water vapour on it, they are called as 'sweats.' It's a common process for handmade products because they don't contain chemicals to "avoid sweating."

(btw, I made a bad choice to open it when my dogs were around. Literally scraped a bit of the cologne with the lid. Very. Regret.)

Here's a closer look of the sweat. I'm in a room-temperature environment btw.

Maverick (I think) sweats the most. Look at it (omg).

Scents:

The back of the tin containers are labelled with their names and the fragrances used. The three scents that I've purchased are Cornerstone, Hot Shot and Maverick.

My colleagues were all talking about how these smells like soap??? Baby product????? Baby powder after barber cut???? AHAHHA. I was simply entertained by their thoughts while they gave me the very exciting faces about how these smell like.

Cornerstone:

Patchouli, Nutmeg, Sandalwood, Cedarwood and a hint of Vanilla & Paprika

This scent is actually very inviting. It smelled like a very easy-going person. A very soothing smell yet comes with a hint of excitement. Makes me wanna do fun activities with guys who smell like this. My colleagues (5 males + 2 females) like this the most tho.
__________

Description from store: Woody, soothing and decidedly comforting, the Cornerstone is warm and enticing. A cornerstone represents the first stone set in every construction of a monument, and every other stone follows suit and builds around it. It is the chief foundation, it is essential and it is indispensable. It defines a boss man, an alpha male, a spear-header, an anchor. Every gentleman will identify with the Cornerstone.

Hot Shot:

Red apple, Jasmine & Rose, Tonka beans, Geranium and Sandalwood.

Hot Shot smells very adventurous like a risk-taking man but also comes with a classy feeling. It has a tint of bitterness, that's why I felt that way. What a unique scent. Not everyone's favourite but I won't say that this scent smells bad. It's just not as inviting as Cornerstone.
__________

Description from store: Spicy, fresh, and unabashedly stimulating. The Hot Shot is a heady scent that captivates. A Hot Shot is classy, intelligent and the crème de la crème. He is a whiz, set to impress with his top-notch skills and talents. Meant for the swanky highbrow with affluent taste.

Maverick:

This scent is somewhat in between Cornerstone and Hot Shot but it comes with a thick woody scent. I'd think of a person with huge body size with this scent. Someone who is almost like Brian Harding from the game, Dream Daddy. (Do. not. judge. pls. I swear I'm normal.)
__________
Description from store: Velvety, woody and crisply cool, the Maverick is a fresh yet exotic mash-up.A Maverick is in a class or league of his own, as he is a non-conformist with a tough and strong character. It is defined as an unbranded calf or cow. He is an intellectual, individualist, indifferent and independent. This is for the distinguished man who stands apart from the rest – the rebel.

In the same room as the previous photos. Lighting source only from the windows in front and some faint lighting from the house door at the back. 5pm sky.

Lighting comes directly from the back window and also the winder behind the couch. Dog at the right bottom of the photo that did not relate to this at all. 5pm sky.

In an open area, aka garden. 5pm sky.

Personal Opinion

_____________________________________________________

The design really gave these solid colognes a luxurious feeling even just by looking at the box packaging. It felt very satisfying to look and smell it. The scent isn't 100% masculine with all that heavy woody or raging scent and I believe that some females who are more masculine can use these as well. This is an exciting experience for me even though I won't be the potential users of these colognes. (I'm just not so masculine and I have a lot of perfumes already.)

As I've mentioned before, I planned to gift these to my guy friends (which at first I felt a bit sceptical about the scents, worrying that my friends won't like em). I personally believe that these scents are safe to give em to almost 80% of the guys out there. The scents give a hint of a person's personality but not strong enough to define them exclusively.

Overall, I had a very fun time with these products :D

Will I buy again?
Honestly, I wouldn't buy them for myself unless I smelled Cleopatra, which is made mainly for females. (Prolly need to visit Major Drop for that but I'm lazy....) Anyway, it depends tho because not all of my guy friends fancy scents. Besides, they may have more feminine sense than I thought.

That's all for this post!

Review| Bath & Body Works Candles & etcetra

Did you know that a 3-wick Candle (large candle) costs RM130?
Can you also guess how much did I spend here?
For 9 items, I've spent RM313 on them.

WHAAAAT ?!?!?!?
HOW ?!?!?!??!??!?

Well, actually, Bath and Body Works had a sale :)
I've bought four 3-Wick Candles, two condensed room scent spray, one hand wash and one hand sanitizer, which later on I've got one mini body gel for free.

Here's a tip: If you want to buy newer candles that are in discounted sections, go to the newest store which is now located at Sunway Pyramid! They have better store decor, newer products and newer paper bag. (Wait, how did you know bout the paper bag?) The paper bag I've gotten in Midvalley is a little yellowed. Besides, all of their discounted items are either too disgusting for majority or out of season (christmas scents lmao).

It's kinda obvious that they look heavy but a 3-Wick Candle only weight 411g (14.5oz)
It can be pretty heavy when you put all of them into a bag.
(You could also risk breaking the paper bag.)

Here's a warning sign tho. Never burn when no one is there to supervise it.

I have to be honest that when I was scent-hunting, I almost throw up in the store because some smells are just simply disgusting to me. Some of those scents were okay for my bestie, which I cannot understand how she doesn't feel nauseous after smelling it but I do. Anyway, let's check out the first scent that caught my attention.

Farmland Apple (RM39 after 70% off)

This scent isn't the best smelling one but it does smell alright to me. It smells very, very much like apple scented handwash from Watsons. The one with green liquid. Hmm, now that I've mentioned it, it does smell more like green apple than red apple.... Not sure why it's in red packaging haha.

But another reason why I bought this is because I'm recently into white / light magick stuff. I've been eyeing some stuff from the occult online shop but damn the shipping fee is crazy.

Anyway, they said that if you dress candles with suitable essential oil, they can work better to bring you the achievement you requested, e.g.: protection, fortune, love, etc. Red is associated to Attraction/Love. Yeah... I'm looking for someone to love me HAHAHHA But all of these are just for fun. If I were to be serious, I'd be migrating to the states already.

The second scent that caught my attention:

Beach Blossoms (RM65 after 50% off)

It smells exactly just like its name. A little beach scent and a little bit of floral scent, something like lavender or lilac. It's hard to determine the scent correctly because they never put any description on the product :/ (Boooooo)

White colour candle wax suits this product well.

While the previous two were bought from the Mid Valley branch, the candles below were from the Pyramid Branch instead.

Fresh Cut Lilacs (RM65 after 50% off)

God, I love this scent soooooo much. It's so goooooood. It smells like fresh flowers with sweet, sweet after-scent. The whole packaging also helped brightening up the mood. Gosh, I wish I know how to describe this product in details but it's hard. I guess the best way to describe is that, this is the best scent I've ever smelled in the entire store! Both of the stores! It's really just sooooo goooooood.

The whole thing is just perfect. The smell. The packaging. The colour combinations. GYAH!

Jasmine Waters (RM65 after 50% off)

Ok, this is actually for my little sister. I asked a sales guy, stating that my sister's preferences are a lot guyish than any girls. (She likes heavy bikes and shooter games.) So at first I asked if he likes the candle with subtle apple scent but he preferred this one instead. "This one has stronger scent and it smells better," he said. So I took his suggestion and because I was a little scared, I called my little sister and ended up waking her up from her nap. I asked her if she's okay with Jasmine scent, without hesitation, she said yes multiple times. (She doesn't know I'm giving her this. She did ask me why did I asked her such an odd question but I just walk away while saying that I needed a suggestion.)

It has a lovely Jasmine scent that doesn't feel too strong or too sweet.

I bought other stuffs from both of these stores too.
Initially I wanted to go to B&BW because I wanted to buy a gift for my guy friend. But as I was approaching the store, it was filled with "Discount" labels. Not sure if it was my luck or what haha.

So I got him this deep cleansing hand wash.
It is called Aloe Agave.

It has a breezy beach scent in it, pretty suitable for guys. There's also small little beads in it. I think the beads are the melting-type instead of plastic beads. A small little amount of it can be very soapy. So if you're getting one of these, make sure you don't squeeze out too much of the content.

The last thing I got for my friend is this room scent in Coconut Mahogany.

It smells just right for guys but not too musky. The scent has a very gentle guyish feeling to it.

For myself tho, I got myself another room spray in White Gardenia scent (RM18 after 50% discount). They smell incredible. Similar to the Lilac scent but stronger.

It suits better for bigger rooms. You can spray in a small room but make sure that it is absolutely ventilated and at the same time, you can't spray too long. A little goes a long way as well.

Now because I'm close to the amount of getting a freebie, I grabbed this hand sanitizer into my cart during checkout. It is called as Pretty As A Peach (RM10 original price). It smells refreshing, almost as if it could wake me up from a boring lecture.

Just like its name, it has a peachy scent but not very strong. It's the dominant scent that makes you feel refreshing but I can't really identify what smell it is similar to. I could only describe it as a happy scent.

On the other hand, the freebie that I obtained is this mini body gel in the scent of Magic In The Air. The sales girl in Midvalley Branch had suggested me to get a candle in this scent but I prefered Beach Blossoms. This one smells similar but without too much of the beach scent and it smells a bit heavier as well. It is also a bit more subtle than Beach Blossoms.

It is a lot soapier than the hand was and the after-shower scent still lingers strongly on my skin.

So, that is all for my haul!
If you want to purchase candles during promotions too, bad news for you, they don't have a Malaysia version of Facebook page so there isn't much updates. There isn't an official website for Malaysia too. The only way to get updates is when you sign up for newsletter at the cashier counter of each branch.

That is all for my blog post!
See ya in the next :)
